A quick note on why this page covers both roles together. As we've worked through the Engineering Director search, a genuine pattern emerged: the strongest candidates for the Engineering Director role are almost invariably the same names we'd put forward for a Rail Systems Director role — senior engineers with HSR pedigree who've led (or could lead) multi-discipline rail systems delivery. Rather than splitting them into two separate pages and making you look twice, we've combined them here so you can see the full population with that dual lens.

Across the shortlist you'll see the weight fall in two directions. Some — Fayez Shahin, Meisam Esmaeilzadeh, Kuldeep Sungher, Dominique Rulens, Paul Brookes — sit squarely in the Engineering Director / multi-discipline design & integration space. Others — Mike Essex, Stewart Kent, Laurent Perocheau, Massimo Santi — are systems-specialist candidates whose depth in CCS, traction power, systems integration or rail systems engineering would sit more naturally under a Rail Systems Director title. A couple (Kuldeep, Laurent) could plausibly go either way.
